An evening at Snack Akko

スナック「あっこ」

A drink, a friendly conversation, and perhaps your favorite song. Enjoy a sociable evening chatting with the mama and singing karaoke at a Japanese snack bar.

  • Enjoy a drink
  • Chat with the mama
  • Sing karaoke

Meet the mama: Akko

Akko is a huge fan of Japanese high school baseball and loves karaoke. With 40 years of experience in this line of work, she has spent four decades welcoming guests.

What is a Japanese “snack bar”?

In Japan, a snack bar, or sunakku, is a small drinking venue where conversation is a big part of the evening. It is not a snack-food counter or a restaurant for a full meal. Many are run by a hostess and owner affectionately called the “mama,” and karaoke is often part of the fun.

Every snack bar has its own character. The appeal is the social time: enjoying a drink, talking with the person hosting you, and sharing a song rather than simply ordering and leaving.
